MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' men's soccer team battled SAC rival Wingate University to a 2-2 tie Friday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. MHC fell to 5-6-4 overall and 2-2-3 in the SAC while the Bulldogs took their season record to 9-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the league.
Kenny Wallace (Glasgow, Scotland) scored the first goal in the match at the 3:45 mark. The goal was scored when Wallace put in a rebound off his own penalty kick attempt.
Junior Nyemb (Douala, Camaroon) tied the contest at 1-all in the 18th minute off a deflection sent in by Rory Green (Nottingham, England). Thomas Poole (Birmingham, England) gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage at the 35:20 mark when he also scored off a deflection. The goal was assisted by Paul Gallagher (Strabane, Northern Ireland). The team carried that score into the locker room at halftime.
Brandon Tardioli (Ottawa, Canada) scored the final goal in the match at the 66:40 mark when he scored off a long breakaway pass from Rury Caulfield (Glasgow, Scotland). The teams would play 43:20 additional minutes of scoreless soccer to end the contest with a 2-2 draw.
The match was extremely close. MHC edged the Bulldogs in shots, 28-26 while Wingate had one more corner kick (6-5) than the Lions. Alex Huckabee (Kernersville, N.C.) played all 110 minutes in goal for MHC and made five saves. Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) also played the entire match in goal for Wingate and made eight saves.
Mars Hill will host league leading Lincoln Memorial University on Tuesday, October 27. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
