The Mars Hill men's soccer team is competing against Tusculum in the SAC Tournament Championship at 1 p.m. today for the first time since 1998. That season, Mars Hill took home the crown. Live Stats will be available for the game.
The team left Mars Hill this morning at 7:30 a.m. and is on its way to the game in Rock Hill, S.C. Follow the journey through periodic updates and photos throughout the day.
The team just got done eating breakfast at Ryan's in Lincolnton, N.C. We're about an hour outside of Rock Hill, S.C. watching the movie "Miracle." For those of you that haven't seen the movie, it's about the Miracle on Ice in 1980 in Lake Placid, N.Y. when the USA hockey team defeated the heavy favorities from the Soviet Union. Tusculum is the favorite to win today's soccer game. It won't be a miracle if the Lions win, but it'll be a tough game just like every game from this tournament.
We just arrived in Rock Hill, S.C., and the facilities are amazing. The name of the soccer complex is Manchester Meadows. We'll be playing on Carlisle Field. The team will start warming up in 5 minutes. It's almost gametime!!!
IT'S ON!
The game didn't turn out how Lion Nation wanted, but this team reached a level that it hadn't in 11 years. The Lions also reached the conference championship in the first season of head coach Ian Clerihew's tenure while taking out two of the top three seeds in the tournament. Rury Caulfield, Xavi Belles and Alex Huckabee made the all-tournament team. Expect Mars Hill to be back in the championship game next season competing for the title.
On a side note, Cindy Whitt took game photos, and those will be on the web later this week.
