MARS HILL, N.C. - Rury Caulfield (Glasgow, Scotland) scored two goals to lift the Mars Hill men's soccer team over Barton 4-0 on Senior Day at Meares Stadium. The Lions end the regular season at 6-7-4. The Bulldogs end their season at 5-13-1.
Before the game, seniors Kel Cox (London, England), Jason Ford (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Kenny Wallace (Glasgow, Scotland), and student athletic trainer Chelsea Daugherty (Summit, N.J.) were recognized for their dedication to Mars Hill athletics during their collegiate careers.
Steven Bivens (Douglasville, Ga.) scored the first goal of the game and second of the season in the 21st minute. He followed a deflection that Brian Riesenberg (Fort Thomas, Ky.) was unable to collect and put the ball in the net. Danny O'Neill (Glasgow, Scotland) had an assist on the play.
In the next minute, Caulfield scored his first goal of the day. He took the ball around one Barton defender and beat Riesenberg to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage.
Caulfield struck again in the 50th minute. He blasted a direct kick from 18 yards out for his team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Zach Wheeler (Greenville, S.C.) scored the last goal of the day in the 81st minute. He beat Riesenberg for his first goal of the season.
Mars Hill outshot Barton 24-14. Alex Huckabee (Kernersville, N.C.) made eight saves for the Lions. Riesenberg recorded nine saves for the Bulldogs.
Mars Hill will next compete in the 2009 Food Lion SAC Men’s Soccer Tournament.
