BREVARD, N.C. The fourth-seeded Brevard College women’s tennis team downed fifth-seeded Mars Hill, 5-1, Tuesday afternoon in the Quarterfinals of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The victory is the first for any Tornado team in a SAC Tournament contest.

Brevard (16-5) started the day with two victories in doubles play. Lindsay Shaeffer and Kim Dixon fell in the top spot to Erika Pinate and Patricia La Rovere, 8-4, but Lindsay Hostetter and Kayley Duval rebounded on the second court with an 8-4 triumph over Adriana Borda and Kim Blythe. Merek Slagle and Sara Douglas finished the pairs action with an 8-1 win over Jordan Dockery and Paola Aybar Jimenez.

The match was called after the Tornados won three singles matches. In the No. 2 spot, Hostetter clinched with a win over La Rovere, 7-5, 6-0, while Dixon won over Dockery at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0 and Jennifer Nyman beat Aybar at No. 5, 6-2, 6-0.

After Hostetter clinched, the matches pitting Shaeffer and Pinate, Duval and Borda and Douglas and Blythe were halted in progress.
