HICKORY, N.C. – Adverse weather shortened day one of action at Lenoir Rhyne University as the Mars Hill College Track Teams began their battle for the Southeast Region Championship. Only a few events were able to be completed before a thunderstorm postponed competition until Saturday morning.
The women got off to a fast start with first place finishes in the High Jump by Ashley McCarthy (Clearwater, Fla.) and in the 10,000m by Angela Woodward (Gahanna, Ohio). The Lions also claimed second place in both events with Ginny Smith (Crossnore, N.C.) in the High Jump and Hannah Moore (Franklin, N.C.) in the 10,000m.
The hammer throw was the only event affected by the postponement and will be completed Saturday morning.
Brad Nagel (King, N.C.) led a strong performance by the men in the Hammer Throw with his second place finish. Also placing in the Hammer Throw were Richard Clarke (Lookout Mountain, Ga.) in third and Alan Broadnax (Travelers Rest, S.C.) in fourth.
The high jump and javelin were underway when the meet was postponed and both events will be completed Saturday morning. The 10,000m has also been moved to Saturday morning.
