MARS HILL, N.C. - Shawn Reece, Audley Elder and Wesley Starnes have all signed to swim for the Mars Hill men's team during the 2009-10 academic year, head coach Teddy Guyer announced.
"I am very excited to have signed such quality young men to our swim team," said Guyer. "We expect a lot from our student-athletes, and all of these new swimmers have that ability to step in right away and help us reach our goals for next year.”
Reece is from Draughn High School in Connelly Springs, N.C. He was a four year regional and state qualifier. Reece finished this year in fifth place in the 50 and 100 Yard Freestyle at the North Carolina State Swim Meet. He was named Most Valuable Swimmer and All-Conference Swimmer of the Year. He swims year round with XCELL Aquatics.
Elder is from Tuscola High School in Waynesville, N.C. He is a four-time regional and state qualifier and placed sixth in the 100 Yard Breaststroke this year at the North Carolina State Swim Meet. Elder was also selected to the All-Western North Carolina Swim Team and holds school records for best times in the breaststroke. He swims for the Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club.
Starnes is from Pasco High School in Dade City, Fla. He was All-Conference in the 100 Yard Butterfly and a three-time regional qualifier in that event.
The Mars Hill men's swim team went 8-0 this past season. Carson Fackler (Bakersfield, Calif.) was named Appalachian Conference Swimmer of the Year. Guyer was named Appalachian Conference Coach of the Year.
