Natalie HaithcoxGREENWOOD, S.C. - The Lander softball team pulled out two squeakers against Mars Hill College Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader when the Bearcats won the first game, 6-5, and took the second, 7-5, at Doug Spears Field. After splitting a doubleheader at Mars Hill on Friday, Lander improves to 3-1, while the Lions slip to 1-3.

In the first game, Lander rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Nikki Cumalander's (Chapin, S.C.) two-RBI double plated Lindsey Sammons (Abbeville, S.C.) and Annie Polhamus (Tifton, Ga.).

Hayley Leissner (Jefferson, Ga.) earned the victory for Lander in relief, striking out two and allowing one run on three hits in three innings pitched.

MHC's Tiffany Farthing (Kure Beach, N.C.), now 0-1, took the loss as she struck out four, walked two and allowed five earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings pitched.

For Lander, Daisy Stewart (Roswell, Ga.) went 1-for-2 with one triple and three RBI. Cumalander went 2-for-3 with one double and two RBI. Sammons went 2-for-3.

For Mars Hill, Natalie Haithcox (Asheboro, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with one home run. Rebekah Huff (Mars Hill, N.C.) went 1-for-2 with one triple. Lindsey Barrier (Salisbury, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with four RBI.

In the second game, Lander rallied for six runs in the second inning to propel the Bearcats to the win.

Leissner (2-1) was awarded the win while striking out seven, walking four and allowing one earned run on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched.

Tara West (Urbana, Ohio), now 1-2, suffered the loss while striking out two, walking three and allowing three earned runs on no hits in 1.1 innings pitched.

For Lander, Carrie Hudson (Goose Creek, S.C.) went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Sara Senn (Fond du Lac, Wisc.) went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

For Mars Hill, Haithcox went 2-for-4 with one double. Anna James (Bellevue, Wash.) went 2-for-4. Ashley Angell (Winston-Salem, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Mars Hill will travel to Montreat on February 10. The game will start at 1 p.m.
