BELMONT, N.C. - The tenth-ranked Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team fell to the visiting eighth-ranked Mars Hill Lions 15-6 Saturday afternoon in a contest that was played in a constant downpour. Mars Hill remains unbeaten at 3-0, while the Crusaders fall to 1-2.
Mars Hill, which never trailed in the contest, was led by David Hodgins' (Windor, Ontario, Canada) four goals, while Eric Benesch (Bloomingdale, Ontario, Canada) and Jeff Cizdziel (Stafford, Va.) each had three. Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Kevin Woods (New Market, Ontario, Canada) both had a pair, while Tim Burns (Downingtown, Pa.) had one. Benesch and Danny Farmer both had two assists, while Tyler Farmer (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) had a pair. Hodgins and Lance Renes (Aurora, Colo.) both had one each.
Belmont Abbey, which outshot Mars Hill 40-37, was led by Michael Brown (Hartford, Conn.) who finished with four goals and one assist. Dave DiLuigi (Saugus, Mass.) and Jedd Gardner (Vestal, N.Y.) had the other two goals. DiLuigi, Douglas Lipka (Silver Spring, Md.) and Tristan Keas (Penn Yan, N.Y.) all had one assist each.
Defensively, Mars Hill was led by Brent Hann's (Fallston, Md.) nine ground balls as the Lions tallied 54 on the afternoon. Gardner had seven of Belmont Abbey's 46 ground balls.
Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y.) had 14 saves for the Lions in goal. Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Tony Kikola (Baltimore, Md.) made seven saves.
Mars Hill will travel to Catawba on March 7. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
