MARS HILL, N.C. - After the Lions' football game against Tusculum College, the Athletic Department named the practice football in honor of David Cassell. Cassell was a tight end for the Lions from 1998-2001.

Cassell was a four time All-SAC selection (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001) including being named to the All-SAC First Team in 2001, 2000 and 1999. He was a second team pick in 1998. Cassell was awarded the South Atlantic Conference's Jacob’s Blocking Trophy in 2001 and was an American Football Coaches Association All-American in 2001. Cassell finished with 143 career catches for 1,929 yards, and 20 career touchdowns.
