WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill College men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Wingate University to preview the region course and competition. On a hot and humid day, the women continued to show steady improvement while the men posted another top finish.
In the 6k women's race, Angela Woodward (Gahanna, OH) and Anita Casey (Greer, SC) worked together to impressive finishes. Woodward finished 14th (26:04) with Casey nearby in 16th (26:19). Laurel Sitze (34th, 27:05), Hannah Washburn (45th, 27:34), and Hannah Moore (69th, 28:30) completed the scoring for the Lions. Allison Kreutzer of Clayton State won the women's race by nearly a minute with a time of 24:03.
The women defeated some top conference and region competition en route to 5th place out of 16 teams with 168 points. Augusta State University was victorious in the women's competition with a score of 37 points.
Due to course construction, the men competed in a 9700 meter race rather than a full 10,000 meters. In his first race of the season, Kit Powell (Antigo, WI) shook off the rust and finished a strong 6th place in 33:45. Trey McCain (Gilbert, SC) claimed a 10th place finish in a time of 35:11. Team tactics allowed for a pack of four Lions - Joel Barnett (15th, 35:39), Aaron Thomas (16th 35:40), Josh Oxendine (17th, 35:44), and Will Mikolajczak (18th, 35:45) - to reach the finish line close together. Jayce Watson of Wingate University won the men's race in a time of 32:15.
The men finished second in a field of 12 teams with a score of 64 points. Clayton State won the team competition with an impressive score of 34 points.
